Social Media and Privacy

In my opinion, even though there is eventually justice when sexual assault is posted online, it does not outweigh the forever damage done to the victim. For example, Audrie Pott, who's whole school saw "an intimate part of her body" was so mortified that she hanged herself. This is a perfect explanation on it's own for why issues like this should have nothing to do with Social Media. I think problems of this sort can be handled in a much different fashion, protecting the victims instead of embarrassing and hurting them even more. If stories like the one about Audrie Pott are published, they are going to get even more attention than they have already gotten which is the last thing they need. People need to realize that posting sexual assaults online is not okay in any way, shape, or form. It can ruin the victims lives.

  1. I respectfully disagree with your post. I feel that sharing sexual assaults online does have its place and some positives as it helps bring some type of awareness to an issue that would otherwise be swept under the rug. I feel that they can share the case without sharing videos or actual pictures of the incident itself to help protect the privacy of the victim.

  2. I also have to respectively disagree with your post. In the article it mentioned that over 50% of rape crimes, the rapist does not get convicted because the victim does not tell anyone. I think that if social networks were to buckle down on problems like sexual assault crimes, they could ultimately put a stop to them all together. Audrie Pott for example, imagine Facebook or Twitter were to find information on this rape within days of it happening. They would be able to contact the government on the crime, and possibly convict the men responsible. I can understand your point of view of the negatives of social network sharing, but I think overall there is a more effective and efficient way of bringing justice to these crimes, and utilizing the the social networks would be beneficial.
